The term Squared Circle originates from the evolution of pugilism and combat sports.  In the early days of the sport, competitors would engage in a circle surrounded by the spectators who formed a barrier.  In order to better control the space, four posts with connecting ropes at each post were strategically placed to outline and support the area of engagement creating a square.
